Day 130: Fried Mushrooms!

Day 130.

I guess I should clarify myself. Fried morel mushrooms. Yum.
If you don't live in the midwest, you probably don't realize how crazy people get about morels. My grandpa is a fierce mushroom hunter. He travels to Shawnee National Forest (2 hours away) to hunt. He also goes to Wisconsin, which is where he found these. This wasn't a good year for morels. He usually comes home with 3 coolers full of mushrooms. This year, he found 1/3 of one cooler. Disappointing, but at least we had some!!! My grandma is quite the mushroom chef, so I asked her to show me how it's done.

Here's the process.

These are what you'll most likely come home with.

Soak them in some salt water to de-bug them.

Photobucket
Drain them well.

Photobucket
Lay them out on a towel to dry until you're ready for them.

Photobucket
Place some flour in the bottom of a plastic grocery sack.

Photobucket
Add the mushrooms.

Photobucket
Shake well to coat.

Photobucket
Have some oil nice and hot. Grandma uses an electric skillet so the heat stays even. Put the mushrooms in the oil.

Photobucket
The mushrooms will take about 30 minutes to cook. We like 'em crispy.

Photobucket
We move them along, taking the done ones out, and adding new ones, assembly line style.

Photobucket
Once you've got a nice, big batch fried, dig in!

Photobucket
If your dad will let you near them...

Photobucket
Some like theirs with ketchup, others with barbeque sauce. I just like mine with lots of salt. Millie does too. :)
